They actually know a few of my brother in laws and their families as well as my in laws! With their kids growing up and moving out - Alan lives in Texas, Vanessa is at school in Rexburg at BYU-Idaho and Anthony is prepping for an LDS mission, Carmen knew she wanted an updated family picture. With the passing of Brian's mom, a funeral and service was held in Utah. All of the family came out to honor her. It also provided an excellent opportunity to get together and have family photos taken.

Sometimes life happens and schedules are crazy and the only time you can take pictures is 2 o'clock in the afternoon. With the Collard's that was the case. Alan had a plane to catch first, with everyone else's departures later on. Normally I like to shoot an hour before sunset, but we did not have that luxury. Instead, I embraced the light I had to work with and picked a location I knew would be forgiving to the sun. We shot at Memory grove in Salt Lake City. If you haven't been there before, you really should! It's a beautiful little park in it's own little gully next to the Capital. With the way the sun was hitting, I knew we could hug one side of the park and enter into the trees for some nice, diffused light.

I was so impressed with their outfits, they were so cohesive with each other! But mostly I loved hanging out with these guys! When I'm photographing families that have boys about my brother's ages I sort of go "big sister" on them. I tease them about girls, get them talking and usually make fun of myself and my horrible jokes! But hey, it works! Carmen warned me beforehand that her boys don't like pictures and that sometimes their smiles are so stiff and fake! I'm happy to report that my "big sister bossiness" was able to crack them and we got so really great shots! I loved being able to meet the Collards and help document this time in there lives. I've decided my next step is to just fly myself out to Florida in two years when Anthony gets back so we can do this again, but at the beach!

Meet the Maker https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2018/8/virtual-meet-and-greet-about-whitney      Well hey there, fam! I thought it was about time to have a "Meet the Maker," so to speak. (Easy there, C3PO). I want my viewers to see me as I am - subtle nerd jokes and all. If there is one thing I've LOVED about social media influencing businesses - big and small alike, is that I, as a consumer, get to know YOU! You let me in to your personal lives, and share your personality. So much awesome and wonderful networking! I want my clients to have that with me!

Danny and I have been married for 6 years. In that 6 years we have;

- Finished my bachelors of Science in Art and Visual Communication with an emphasis in Photography and a Minor in Art History

- Lived in an apartment for 3 years and then bought our first house

- Brought home two puppies (Separate times)

- Had three babies; two of which live in Heaven (Jones [pictured] Peyton and Banks)

- Started Robbins Nest Creative Studios with it's accompanying branches (Whitney Beth Photography, Robbins Pottery & Children's Art Classes)

- Gone to Disneyland and Disney World so many times I've lost count (Next trip is in November!)

- Instilled a love for art and nature in Jones

- Kept on loving each other hard.

(The "Birdhaven house" (left) - This is where I lived the longest in Oregon. One whole acre of 50+ year old pine trees

& View of the back pasture of the "Farm House" (right))

I'm from Oregon. I know this one isn't new, and that I mention it frequently, but it's important to me. I take pride in my green upbringing and love to recycle and ride bikes and garden and all that cliche, hippie, Oregonian stuff. I can't help it. Despite having been to Europe and countless other states, I still hold the Oregon Coast close to my heart as one of the most beautiful places in the world. I grew up in the small little town of Newberg. It's about 45 minutes from Portland and 45 minutes from the coast. Smack dab in the heart of wine country. For a time, I lived on a walnut farm (11 acres) and helped take care of our 4 goats, 2 llamas, 2 sheep, 1 pig, 1 goose, 16 chickens, 2 dogs and 2 cats. We still (lovingly) refer to that house as the "farm house." There is nothing better than having all that land and all those animals. I grew up around animals my whole life! I can still remember getting my first dog, Angel, at age 4. I've been loving on my dogs ever since.

I am the oldest of ten children. Yep. 10. Living in Oregon, the first question we'd get asked was, "Are you Catholic?" when we replied no, they'd always say, "Oh, then you must be mormon." ha. yep. (It was quite the culture shock when we moved to Utah and people stopped asking if we were Catholic and didn't bat an eye at our van!) There are 5 boys and 5 girls. I don't know how that worked out so perfectly, but it did.

(last year's family picture)

My mom was always taking pictures of us growing up. I still vividly remember the days when we'd go to Costco to pick up our prints. We'd stand out of the way and look over every image together. Mom always got doubles and triples of things so that we could have a copy when we were older. I loved being able to hold on to those memories and flip through them whenever I wanted. For my 5th birthday my mom got me my very first digital camera. It was a cheap little point and shoot 35 mm. But she taught me how to load the film and care for it. I carried that thing with me everywhere. Especially family vacations. There was this one trip when we went to a ghost town and got to ride a train up to the cemetery. It was the first time I had really come across a different landscape than I was used to. The hills where covered in yellow grass and everything was dry. I remember looking out and imagining it feeling like velvet. I wanted to take a picture of it. My mom told me "not to waste film" and to only "take a picture of someone in it." spitefully I made my brothers stick their hands on the railing and snapped it. I told my mom that Austin and Robert were in it. It wasn't until we got that prints back that Mom saw what I did! Ha! Funnily enough, I decided to specialize in family photography rather than landscape!

(My "in spite" picture)

When I'm with my clients, taking their pictures, I want them to feel like we are having a conversation through our movements. To get the ball rolling, I decided to film a little "get to know you" speed dating visual. Give it a watch if you want to hear how I embarrassed myself in front of MY ENTIRE KINDERGARTEN CLASS. ha. It's good. I promise.

Austin + Jenna: A Proposal | Utah Engagement Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2018/7/austin-jenna-a-proposal-utah-engagement-photographer      Getting engaged is one of the pivotal moments in your life. It's from there that you start shaping the direction your life is headed. My little brother, and closest to me in age had been dating his girlfriend, Jenna, pretty seriously when he came and asked for help in planning the proposal! I was so excited and so proud of my brother! (Especially since he had the thought to have it documented!) Jenna's oldest sister was also helping and between the three of us, we were able to capture a pretty magical evening.

We started by finding a spot up Little Cottonwood Canyon, just off of the Temple Quarry trail. It was the perfect little cove. Austin had spent hours hand lettering the signs that would lead Jenna to the "spot." We were going for a whimsical, woodland feel to it, and Austin nailed it! Jamie, Jenna's sister, bought fairy lights off of Amazon and I drug out all of my lanterns and candles. Once at the spot, Austin set up all the posts and I helped create the arch with the surrounding driftwood and greenery. It all came together perfectly!

While we waited in the bushes I was giddy with excitement! I was about to gain another sister and my cute brother was about to gain a wife! So exciting! Just your friendly PSA reminder, if you are hiking and you see a proposal unfolding right in front of you, DO NOT THINK YOU CAN TRY TO WALK THROUGH IT SNEAKILY! Just as Austin was about to go down on one knee, a hiker approached the cove. I could see the look on his face as he stood there, contemplating whether or not he could squeeze past us with out us noticing. Fat chance buddy! I knew he was already in the shot of the camera we had set up to video, and I was doing everything in my power to crop him out of my frame. I made eye contact and tried to speak through my gaze saying, "DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT, SIR! I AM SPEAKING TO YOU THROUGH MY EYES! SERIOUSLY DO NOT TRY AND SNEAK BY! WE CAN SEE YOU!" Luckily, after a few more minutes of awkwardly watching and glancing past us, he left.

Luckily Austin and Jenna didn't notice, I was able to crop him out and Jaime had them redo the last bit of the proposal for the video she was filming. phew. but still, thinking about it just makes me get so irritated all over again! Anyways. Without further ado, here is the story of how Austin asked, and Jenna said yes.

Don't forget, don't be like this guy.

Robbins Family Pictures | Lindon Family Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2018/7/robbins-family-pictures-lindon-family-photographer It's always such a treat when I get to photograph my family. Robby is my oldest brother in law. (I photographed his wedding to Kristina a few years ago) I love being able to be a part of their lives and help document it. Audrey, Kristina's oldest daughter was called to serve a mission in California. Before she left they wanted to document and capture this sweet moment in their lives. Audrey went through the Timpanogas LDS Temple, which is why the location was chosen for their photographs. We were blessed with gorgeous, golden light and horrible BYU Football traffic. ha. I love how these images turned out! I love even more seeing them hung up on my mother in law's walls! Here are my favorites from that day.

But seriously, that is how I felt during this entire session. My little sister, Makayla graduated! For those unfamiliar with our family dynamic; I am the eldest in a line of ten children. Yep. Ten. My mom and dad hit the jackpot with me so much that they tried nine more times to get another Whitney. Ha. Makayla is number five. I can't believe that HALF of the Jones crew are technically "adults." I loved getting some one on one time with Makayla up in the mountains, making beautiful pictures and having the best time ever in a field of flowers!

What to Wear for Photos - 5 Tips From a Pro https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2018/7/what-to-wear-for-photos---5-tips-from-a-pro © Whitney Beth Photography

One of the hardest things to decide on, once you have pictures scheduled, is what to wear. It's an never ending dilemma of finding outfits that everyone will look good in, without "dating' the image, and making it something that your family will actually put on and feel comfortable in. Being a family and senior photographer based out of Utah, I get this question a lot, "What should we wear?" Below are the 5 tips I tell my clients to apply when choosing your outfits.

1. Color

This is a big one, if you ignore every other tip but this one, I'll still be happy. I tell my clients to choose around 3 colors to pick outfits from. Find 3 colors that flow well together or compliment each other. When in doubt, look at a color wheel. I'm serious. Take it back to elementary school when you learned about monochromatic, analogous and complimentary color schemes. Remember, in the art world, black and white aren't colors, so they don't count. Same applies for picking your outfits, add whites and blacks in to help build up your outfit without it taking away a color slot.

Monochromatic - One color. Chose one color to work with and tie in varying shades of that same color.

Analogous - Three colors that touch on the color wheel. Use any three, as long as they are touching.

Complimentary - Colors across the color wheel from each other. (There's a reason Red and Green look so good together at Christmas)

A Perfect example of a monochromatic color scheme. Even though there are hints of white and beige, it is still primarily blue.

In the photo above, you'll find an excellent example of a monochromatic color scheme. Even though white and beige are in the outfits, it is still primarily blue. Another thing to consider when choosing your colors, is to factor in where you are going to be taking them. Picking colors that are part of the natural landscape is an excellent and easy way to make sure you look cohesive.

Another easy way to have your colors chosen is to pick someone in the family to wear a print, and from there you simply pull the colors from the design. This is easy to accomplish if you have little girls! Their dresses are always full of beautiful patterns and cohesive colors. Take the picture below for example; by pulling the blues, cream and pinks out it creates a perfect look for the whole family that was easy to achieve.

2. Look at Your Home Decor

this one might not be as obvious, but don't worry, I'm here to guide you through! By looking at your home decor and seeing the environment you want you pictures to be hung in can help narrow down you options. This is where "warm" and "cool" colors come into play. If you refer back to the color wheel, the cool colors are on one side and the warm on the other. Cool colors consists of blues and warm consists of red. Yellow and purple can be either warm or cool, depending on what side they are being paired with. You may love the idea of a blue, purple, green color scheme, but find that it doesn't "go" with your cream, yellow and pink living room. By putting thought into your outfits, your pictures will help complete the look of your space, not draw attention away from it.

Living-room interior. 3d rendering.

Cool Colors (blue, grey, green)

Interior with armchair and coffee table 3d rendering

Warm Colors (yellow, brown, red)

3. Layers

This is a big one guys, a little thing, but big. Layering makes all the difference. Wearing a dress? Throw on a jacket, scarf or accessories. Boom. You just upped the classy factor. Button up shirt? Sweater over it or roll and cuff the sleeves. So good. Just imagine you are shopping in your Pinterest closet. Layering adds depth and gives it some dimension. You want depth. Even adding a belt to a dress will do so much for your image!

4. Patterns

Let me just start by saying, "all things in moderation." Patterns are great, they help add personality to the images as well as tie in colors, amongst other things. But if you get all the boys in the same, matching plaid shirt, it's going to be a sea of dizzy lines and our eyes aren't going to know where to look. They will follow the lines from on shirt to the next and miss the most important part of the image; your beautiful, smiling face! I'm not saying rule out patterns completely, just be aware of the rest of the outfits in the group and you'll be fine! Subtle patterns work so much better than loud, bright, vibrant ones. And, as mentioned before, they are a lifesaver when it comes down to picking out your colors!

The two patterns in the above picture are perfect examples layering patterns. The checkered pattern is a loud pattern, while the design on the dress is soft. Having these two opposites help give variety to the picture, while maintaining a steady, cohesive flow.

Here's another example of picking a pattern and drawing color inspo from it.

5. Location

This has been talked about briefly in other sections, but location is a big part in picking out what you are going to wear! There's the obvious; dress for the proper climate and weather - and the not so obvious, what is going to go best with your home and outfits? I'm all about cohesion. When you have something that flows so effortlessly, you are able to focus more on the people and the emotion in the image rather than critique outfit or location choices. That is what family pictures are all about anyways! You! Time of day is another thing to consider when choosing outfits. Golden hour is beautiful and makes everything so perfectly, well, gold! Using that type of lighting to your advantage, you can throw in some yellows to compliment that fleeting moment of the day. Like below!

The red rock down in St. George at sunrise looks pink! I knew that their sweater and shirt were going to look so perfect!

Your photographer will know what locations look like ahead of time. Like the above picture for example. I knew that the boarder along the reservoir as well as the dirt had a red/pinkish tint to it. I was able to advise my clients that Navy and Watermelon would be the perfect compliment to the landscape.

6. Bonus Tip! Wear what you feel comfortable in!

This one is important to remember. If you don't feel confident and comfortable in your clothes, you aren't going to like the way your pictures turn out. There is no amount of photoshopping that can change that. Wear what makes you feel good! Your confidence will radiate through the photograph and you will love how they turn out.

I hope this guide was helpful to you! Leave me a note in the comments if it was! Here's to happy, beautiful pictures!

Everyone looked so great in their Christmas colors, surrounded by pine trees! I especially loved getting to photograph little Reagan and Naomi! Luckily for everyone, they know me pretty well buy now and gave out the best smiles! When it came down to choosing pictures, everyone loved them so much that Corina decided to purchase a mini session slot so that she could get images as well! I love it when i have the same favorites as my clients!

Larsen Family Photos | Park City Extended Family Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/12/larsen-family-photos-park-city-extended-family-photographer I have a special place in my heart for extended family pictures. I come from a large family (Oldest of 10 kids), and so does my husband (youngest of 8). To me there is nothing better than getting the whole family together. I love seeing the interaction with cousins - they really are your first best friends. The Larsen family was no different. In fact, I felt right at home! The majority of them are from Idaho, with a couple in Utah and one family currently living in Australia! They had rented a house in Park City for a reunion and thought to document their time together. Luckily they are good sports and our sunset session had to be moved to a sunrise session! I call these guys the dream team! Not only was everyone on time and happy, they were ALL LOOKING AT THE CAMERA, even the babies! Seriously. No head swaps for me! I not only love how these pictures turned out, I love this family!

Bailey Wedding | Salt Lake City Wedding Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/11/bailey-wedding-salt-lake-city-wedding-photographer Whitley and Tom are the cutest couple ever! In honor of their one year anniversary, I'm finally getting around to blogging their romantic, winter wedding. Whitley and Tom got married in the Salt Lake City Temple. After family pictures we walked around the temple together, getting all the perfect shots. I've heard a friend say that we as photographers are your professional third wheel! haha! So true, even more true after you have only been married an hour. Whitley and all her bridesmaids looked so perfect with their AMAZING flower crowns. Seriously my favorite part! The reception was held at a club house in Toole. Being huge Harry Potter fans, their handmade decor consisted of pages from the series. It was an honor to capture Whitley and Tom's love and help document their story.

Sorensen Family | Sandy Utah Family Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/11/sorensen-family-sandy-utah-family-photographer Let me just start off by saying I love extended family pictures! There's something so fun about getting to meet an ENTIRE family in one sitting. Not only do we have a blast, but we make magic that I know the grandkids are going to love looking at throughout their lives. The Sorensens are near and dear to my heart. Martha and Dave are not only my neighbors, but Dave is the bishop over our congregation. I was so happy they trusted me to capture these precious moments. What was originally planned for up the canyon, quickly changed to somewhere in the valley when a fall snowstorm graced Jordan Pines with a light layer of snow and 30 degree temps. I knew that pictures would go a lot smoother if we weren't all freezing! My favorite place to shoot at Wheeler Farms is the South East corner of the property. If I hadn't of said anything, you would assume these were up the canyon! I am OBSESSED with how these images turned out! The light was perfect and everyone was a good sport to put up with my lame jokes. Here are Martha's favorites that made their way into a leather bound photobook!

Her mom's only request was that we get a picture by the cornerstone stating the date the temple was built. The reason being that Lindsey was there inside her (very) pregnant mom's tummy! We had so much fun walking around the grounds and enjoying the fall leaves and weather!

Hansen Formals | Salt Lake City Wedding Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/11/hansen-formals-salt-lake-city-wedding-photographer In honor of these guys' one year anniversary, I thought I'd blog their formal session! Natalie is a big High School Musical fan and wanted to make a pit stop at East High before we headed over to the Salt Lake City Temple grounds. Jake, being the smart husband that he is, went along with it. ;) After our jump we raced over to the temple, just in time for golden hour. These two were so giggly and excited the entire time I photographed them! You could just feel the love radiating off of them! While we walked around the grounds, snapping photos, it was like I wasn't even there. One of my favorite things to do at the Salt Lake Temple is to stay past golden hour, when all the other photographers leave, and shoot for a bit in blue hour. I love to use up all the light I can, and we are left with some pretty unique shots!

South Family Pictures | Taylorsville Utah Family Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/11/south-family-pictures-taylorsville-utah-family-photographer Kelly contacted me out of the blue one day. She said she had admired my work ever since I photographed one of her old colleague's weddings a few years ago. Come to find out that her old colleague is my brother in law! Talk about a small world! When I met up with Kelly to go over the details of her shoot, she brought her little sidekick, Jake with her. Jake reminds me so much of my little brother, who coincidentally, is the same age! We decided on green mountains! Due to colds and and a freak snowstorm we had to reschedule for a later date. Luckily Jordan Pines always has a bit of green thanks to the beautiful pine trees that surround the meadow and trail head. I am in love with how their photos turned out!

Hodell Family 2017 | South Jordan, Utah Family Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/11/hodell-family-2017-south-jordan-utah-family-photographer I've known the Hodell Family for a few years now. Troy was actually the realtor we worked with when buying our first house! (If you ever need a realtor, Troy is you man!) We loved hanging out with him so much that we became friends and clients to each other! The Hodells lucked out in being one of the last families photographed at albion basin before the snow hit and the gate was closed! Our green, mountainside pictures were perfect with their outfits and their personalities! Jax totally stole the show with all his cute looks he was giving out!

Sandy Utah Photographer | Chandler + Melissa https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/8/sandy-utah-photographer-chandler-melissa Where to even begin? Chandler and Melissa are the dream team. Seriously. Albion Basin, up Little Cottonwood Canyon is seriously one of my most favorite places! Especially during the wildflower bloom! It has all my favorite things; colorful wildflowers, stunning mountain views, pine trees... I could go on and on. So every year when the bloom boom happens I try to shoot there as much as possible. As of recent years, Albion has become quite the popular spot to go to. I can equate it to temple square at the end of a semester on a Saturday. ha. PEOPLE ARE EVERYWHERE! And if you know me, you know that, while I LOVE people, I do not love them in my shots, getting in their shots, etc. I love being secluded with my clients so I can get personalities to come out. Chandler and Melissa were such great sports! I met them at the toll booth by Alta Ski resort at 6:50 am! And they were coming from Provo! But it was SO WORTH IT! Save for a handful of hikers we were the ONLY ONES UP THERE! Can I get a Hallelujah!? The light was perfect and the flowers were vibrant, mix that with the new love of Chandler and Melissa and you get magic. Seriously. I'm dying over how these turned out! I also apologize in advance for how much I share these pictures, because they are what dreams are made of!

Portland Oregon Photographer | Garrett + Kimmie https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/8/portland-oregon-photographer-garrett-kimmie Kimmie + Garrett are my favorites! I've been photographing Kimmie for personal projects ever since we lived in the same apartment complex back when I was first married. We ended up finding out that we were related-ish. Her aunt is my husband's cousin. These two are the nicest people you will ever meet! Once Kimmie got her degree at UVU, she are Garrett moved to Oregon to get her bachelors degree at George Fox University. Which happen to be my old stomping grounds. What are the odds, right? On a trip back to Oregon earlier this year I had a few slots open for mini shoots, I was elated that these two snagged a spot! We had our session at Cook Park - which was the park I grew up going to when I lived in Tigard as a little girl. It was just as green as ever with the most fantastic looking popcorn tree! Kimmie's dress matched perfectly! I'm obsessed with how these turned out!

Matt + Willow | Sandy Utah Photographer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/8/matt-willow-sandy-utah-photographer I've known Willow since forever! Our parents were friends before we were even in the picture. I loved getting to catch up with her and meet her husband, Matt. All three of us are from the Portland, Oregon area, now living in Utah. It has been an adjustment for sure! As an Oregonian, we need a healthy dose of pine trees and rain. Which you have to get creative to find in Utah! Tibble Fork Reservoir is one of my favorite spots in Utah! It just feels like the Pacific Northwest! Willow and Matt were perfect for this location! The pictures we made are full of magic - literally! We even made a butterfly friend :) You have to be some kind of woodland fairy princess for that to happen. And can we please talk about Matt's awesome beard?! He was growing it out to be in the new Book of Mormon films they are making. So basically, he's a movie star! haha. Willow and her sister, Heather, run the Instagram account, The Braided Sisters where they feature new and fun hairstyles. I loved getting to take a few shots of Willows awesome boho braids! Check them out for fun inspiration!

South Jordan, Utah - Senior Photographer | Savannah https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/7/south-jordan-utah---senior-photographer-savannah Savannah is such a cutie! I instantly clicked with her during our consultation and was SO happy that she booked me! She has such a kind and caring heart that is perfectly suited to be a nurse, like she plans. Savannah graduated from Bingham High School with her class of 2017. She is already off to amazing things as she will be serving a full time mission with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints! She received her call and will be serving the people of North Carolina! I am so excited and happy for her! I can't wait to hear of all the good she will do in the world!

When it came down to planning out her session, we both knew we wanted to shoot in the blossoms! Savannah styled herself perfectly for the orchard at the Utah State Hospital. She looked gorgeous in her outfit and with her hair and makeup done by Sarah Hicken - my HUMA I use for all my senior sessions. When it was the day of the session we chatted the whole ride down to Provo! I don't think there was a single lull the entire car ride! The blossoms were perfect and beautiful as ever and we were blessed with gorgeous, stunning light! I'm obsessed with how these turned out! They may just be my new favorite senior session! Enjoy Savannah's favorites and wish her luck on her next adventure in the comments!

Sandy, Utah Family Photographer | Sawyer https://www.whitneybethphotography.com/blog/2017/7/sandy-utah-family-photographer-sawyer Sawyer's Mom, decided it was high time he had some professional photos taken of him and won a mini session from a church auction. 20 minutes may not seem like much time, but for a four year old, it is just plenty! haha! Sawyer totally rocked his session and looked so handsome with his hair done and his little bowtie! We shot at Victor's pond, which is my favorite little wetlands park literally around the corner from my house. It was a perfect overcast day with a couple of fishermen out. Sawyer told me all about his new fishing pole he just got! These are my favorites that Alisa picked from the shoot. Make sure to leave Sawyer some love in the comments! He totally earned his sucker I gave him after the shoot!
