Hello extended family session season! AKA family reunion time! I have been getting SO many inquires this year for extended family sessions (too bad I had to turn most of them away since it was smack in the middle of maternity leave!) Even still, if you're hiring a photographer, or just need a quick iPhone shot of everyone together, these tips will prove incredibly useful!
1. Take the picture early on into the trip/gathering
First off, it'll be easier to get it out of the way and done with, and not to sound like a jerk, but then you can enjoy your family time without pictures looming in the distance. Taking pictures early on in the trip also ensures that the sunburns and bug bites will (hopefully) have not occurred yet.
2. Opt for a morning shoot
I know, I know, the thought of getting your entire family to a shoot on time is hard enough as is, let alone throwing in a start time that rivals breakfast. But trust me, morning shoots are magic. As a general statement - kids are usually happier in the morning. They've just woken up, are ready for the day and it's before naptime. Speaking of being ready for the day, with family pictures over before 10 you have the whole day ahead of you and everyone is ready and you can go and do fun activities!
Honestly this is a good tip for ANY session. Eating before is always a good idea; full tummys equal happy tummys. Just make sure to eat before everyone gets in their outfits. Also avoid any foods that stain mouths and fingers. If everyone is happy and full the session will be so much smoother and quicker!
See? Easy peasy. These tips work with pro photos or Aunt Carol and her quick iPhone shot. It is always better to have some picture than no picture - regardless of what it was shot on. Document that family gathering and enjoy being with the people you love!
